چکیده

The isotopes 2H and 3He have been identified in low-energy cosmic rays during solar-quiet periods from 1973 January to 1974 October. These observations, made with the Caltech Electron/ Isotope Spectrometer on IMP-7, cover the energy intervals 5-29 MeV per nucleon for 2H and 7-50 MeV per nucleon for 3He. We find that the energy spectra oflH, 2H, and 3He all fall rapidly with decreasing energy, giving 2H/1H and 3He/1H ratios which are essentially independent of energy as expected from current theories of the solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays. The measured 4He spectrum, however, is essentially flat below -40 MeV per nucleon, suggesting that there may be contributions from a local, nonsolar source of 4He. Comparisons ofthe 1 H, 2 H, and 3He observations with calculated spectra at 1 AU imply a mean interstellar path length of 7 ± 2 gem 2 • However, present low-energy measurements of Hand He isotopes at 1 AU do not discriminate between possible cosmic-ray source spectra. Isotopic and Elemental Composition of the Anomalous Low-energy Cosmic-ray Fluxes

Recent observations of cosmic rays below ""30 MeV nucleon 1 have revealed anomalous enhancements in the energy spectra of oxygen, nitrogen, and helium relative to those of other nuclei such as boron and carbon. We have measured the quiet-time fluxes of the elements hydrogen through oxygen in the ...,4-30 MeV nucleon1 energy interval during the period 1972 October through 1974 October. We find t...

Final Report on Pd Catalysts , March , 2001

Zirconia-supported Pd160 and bulk Pd160 were used as methane combustion catalysts for a reaction mixture containing 1% methane and 4% l8Oz in helium. The methane oxidation reaction was performed in pulsed experiments and the distribution of oxygen isotopes among the reaction products was monitored. The “0 content of the catalyst following labeled reaction mixture pulses was determined by cataly...

Helium isotopic composition of hydrothermal fluids from the Manus back-arc Basin, Papua New Guinea

We present isotopic analysis of helium in hydrothermal fluids from the Manus back-arc basin, collected during the French-Japanese Manusflux and Manaute cruises in 1995 and 2000, respectively. The helium isotope composition of the fluids is comparable to that measured elsewhere in similar subduction environments, with 3He/4He values (7.4 to 7.9 Ra) slightly lower than typical MORB values, except...

Investigation of genesis and fluid origin in Noghduz gold bearing quartz veins, East Azarbaijan Province, northwest of Iran

The Noghduz  prospecting area, as a part of the Arasbaran metallogenic zone is located about 20 km east of Ahar, East-Azarbaijan Province. The mineralization host rocks are andesite-trachy andesite with the age of  Late  Eocene. The hydrothermal alterations exposed in this area are silicic, argillic, and propylitic. Pyrite is the main hypogene sulfide mineral which is accompanied by lesser amou...

Possible in situ Tests of the Evolution of Elemental and Isotopic Abundances in the Solar Convection Zone

Helioseismology has shown that the chemical composition of the Sun has changed over its lifetime. The surface abundance of helium and heavy elements is believed to have decreased by up to 10% relative to their initial values. However, this reduction is too small to be tested by direct observations of the photospheric chemical composition. Here, we compare the predicted variations in the solar p...

Effects of Mild Water Stress and Diurnal Changes in Temperature and Humidity on the Stable Oxygen and Hydrogen Isotopic Composition of Leaf Water in Cornus stolonifera L.

In this paper we make comparisons between the observed stable isotopic composition of leaf water and the predictions of the Craig-Gordon model of isotopic enrichment when plants (Cornus stolonifera L.) were exposed to natural, diurnal changes in temperature and humidity in a glasshouse. In addition, we determined the effects of mild water stress on the isotopic composition of leaf water. The mo...
